Shed some light

Here is a good tip on how to take photos when shooting into the sun. Sometimes you want to show the water as a background to your photo but the sun happens to be behind your subject. The trick here is to force your camera to use the flash. When shooting in Auto Mode, your camera will compensate for the very bright background and as a result your subject will look dark with loss of detail. Forced flash photography will help to add some light on your subject. Look at the example below of how different the photos are with and without the flash.

Upper Vaal Yellows - Jan 2011
Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:02
(An article submitted by Mahomed Doola - Thank you)This summer we once again braved the mud, miggies, mozzies and all that the upper Vaal River could throw our way. On the first two outings a number of keen, enthusiastic fisherman joined us – their spirits were soon dashed by rapidly rising waters and painful mozzie bites. On the third outing, only a few die hard guys armed with Tabard, braved the mozzies and the mud and were rewarded with a few juvenile large mouth yellows and a number of small mouth yellows – no big large mouths were caught.

What the HACK!

As some of you may have noticed this website was hacked and was subsequently offline for a while.Who knows why assholes with small rods need to prove themselves by destroying someone else's work. I usually make a monthly backup of the site, the January backup failed and I was left with no choice but to use the December one. So this means that we have lost all the content that you guys uploaded since then. If you still have your content please upload again and those who registered after the 5 December 2010 will have to register once more. Comments will have to be re-posted please. Sorry!

Welcome to the new Kaphom Website
Welcome to our NEW interactive website! This new site is very different from the old Kaphom site (which was a static site) where visitors would send e-mails to the webmaster who would then upload them onto the website (a real lengthy process). Now with the new dynamic CMS site, visitors can upload their own images. The site will now focus on the gallery section as this was always the most visited page. The new gallery is much more interactive and fun and allows you to rate the images and leave comments on any of the images you see.
In the eye of the beholder

Here is a really interesting observation that most fisherman don't know about. Nearly all fish look down when they are out of the water. Well at least until they die, that is. That's when it appears as if they are looking straight outwards. I have noticed this phenomenon with carp, kurper, muddies and yellows. I have not researched the topic so I am not sure if this theory holds for all fish species, but it is certainly true and you should check it out the next time you catch one.

Paruk had an idea to start some form of bait recipe exchange area on the site. So I decided to add this article with 2 on my tried and tested recipes as a start. If anyone has any other bait recipes or ideas they would like to share they can add to this article by using the "comment" section below. Just click on comments and add your recipe as part of your comment. We should collect some interesting ideas this way.

Much ado about carping

The truth of the matter is I am not really qualified to advise anyone on how to fish but I’m going to anyway. Have you ever had that day when you sat there on the waters edge and tried everything you could but absolutely nothing was caught – not even a bite. To top it all off the guy next to you was landing the big ones one after the other. The next time it happens, and I hope it never does, try going over to the guy who’s nailing them and spend some time with him. Try to see what he is doing differently and I don’t mean what dip or flavour he is using, I mean try to see how he fishes.
